The new pedestrian overpass
at Circle Drive
provides safer access to area schools and businesses.
A few cones and barrels
remained as the
Circle/Lake interchange reached
completion.
The completed noise
wall and pedestrian
bridge.
Challenges
Were: Access to and from
Interstate 25 at the Circle Drive/Lake Avenue interchange was constrained
because of inadequate merge and diverge lanes. Access to the interstate
from Circle/Lake was limited, primarily due to inadequate left turn
capacity. Through lane capacity of
Circle/Lake was severely limited at the interchange. Development growth in the
vicinity of the interchange has resulted in much higher than expected
traffic volumes. The original pedestrian
overpass was deteriorating. A high volume of pedestrian traffic in
the area was not being accommodated sufficiently.
Project Solutions
Were: Construct additional acceleration/deceleration lanes for
interchange ramps. Construct additional left turn
lane onto the interchange. Increase the number of through lanes on
Circle/Lake at the
interchange and improve the signal progression on Circle Drive/Lake Avenue at the
interchange. Construct a new pedestrian overpass
compatible with
the new interchange. The new interchange concept includes a
plan for local street reconfigurations in collaboration with the City of Colorado Springs
that accommodates local traffic patterns and improves interchange access.
