Fountain Interchange Completed! - Press Release

Challenges Were:
Improving the U.S. 85/87 (Santa Fe Avenue) and Interstate 25 Interchange, specifically,
to improve traffic movement on and off of the interchange ramps.
Decreasing noise levels in neighborhoods bordering the interstate.
Improving movement of traffic on U.S. 85/87 and the structure of the U.S. 85/87 overpass
   bridge.
Improving drainage in the area of the interchange.
Reconstructing the deficient overpass structure on U.S. 85/87.

Solutions Were:
CDOT altered the interchange design, primarily by lengthening acceleration and
deceleration lanes at the interchange ramps and signalizing the interchange.
Ramps were widened to meet current standards.
CDOT built and maintained a Park & Ride facility near the northeast corner
of the interchange.
A noise wall was constructed along the eastern side of I-25, north and south
of the interchange.
CDOT heightened and widened the U.S. 85/87 I-25 overpass bridge to include the
addition of turn lanes and a sidewalk/bikeway along the north side of U.S. 85/87.

Top Priorities:
The primary goals of this project were improved traffic mobility on and
off I-25, local flow of traffic along U.S. 85/87 at the interchange, decreased
noise levels for residents, better roadway drainage and replacement of the deficient
overpass structure on U.S. 85/87.
CDOT addressed ways to maintain traffic flow during all phases of construction
- while minimizing disruption to local residents.
