| CHALLENGES:
- Outdated and non-standard
interchange bridge and ramps at Interstate 25 and State Highway 105.
- Traffic backups
onto the interstate from northbound off-ramp.
- Heavy westbound
traffic on State Highway 105 crossed a two-lane bridge and yielded at
a traffic signal to southbound motorists leaving the town of Monument.
- Interstate 25
traffic weaved with semi-truck traffic at the Port of Entry/Weigh Stations
located just north of the Monument interchange.
- Inadequate spacing
of intersections and signals that impact traffic flow through the area
as well as access to and from Interstate 25.
- Insufficient turn
lanes on State Highway 105 at the interchange.
- Projected growth
indicates that the traffic congestion will intensify over the next few
years.
SOLUTIONS:
- Constructed new
north- and southbound ramps to and from Interstate 25, including loops
for the southbound off-ramp and the northbound on-ramp.
- Realigned the
northbound Interstate 25 off-ramp along Struthers Road.
- Replaced the original
State Highway 105 bridge over Interstate 25 with a six lane structure
(two lanes in each direction plus turn lanes).
- Relocated a part
of Struthers Road approximately 1,000 feet to the east, shifting traffic
to the newly constructed Jackson Creek Parkway
- Added a traffic
signal at the SH 105/Woodmoor Drive intersection.
TOP PRIORITIES:
- Through the duration
of this project CDOT’s goal was to maintain the flow of interstate
traffic during the construction. To lessen the impact of construction
on motorists, CDOT:
- Made communications
a top priority and implemented comprehensive, proactive communications
to keep the community informed of construction activities and impacts
throughout the duration of the project.
- Kept open the same
number of lanes on Interstate 25 during morning and afternoon peak travel
times on weekdays.
- Scheduled work
that requires interstate lane closures only during non-peak travel times.
- Posted advisories
detailing roadway or lane closures and project updates on the project
Web site.
- Used regional
media outlets such as radio and television, in addition to using variable
message signs (VMS) to inform motorists of construction related events.
