Project Challenges
The S. Nevada Avenue/Tejon Street
interchange at I-25 was an outdated
design that CDOT is in the process of
replacing throughout the state.
The original interchange was characterized
by a sharply curved on-ramp from
Nevada Avenue
to I-25, which produced a dangerous weaving pattern
onto I-25.
Motorists on northbound I-25
who used the
Tejon Street exit were forced
to slow down in
the through lanes of interstate traffic to safely navigate the
sharply curved off-ramp.
Motorists on southbound I-25
who used the
Tejon street exit were faced
with conflicting local traffic
movements at Arvada Street.
Project
Solutions
CDOT
replaced the sharply curved on- and off-ramps with a separated
tight diamond interchange
configuration that enhances traffic movements from
I-25 to the local street network as
well as improves safety through the
interchange.
Acceleration and deceleration lanes were
added on I-25 between
Cimarron Street and the Martin Luther
King/U.S. 24 Bypass.
CDOT replaced bridge structures over both
Nevada Avenue and
Tejon Streets.
Funding
The
cost of the interchange safety improvement project was approximately
$30 million.
