I-25 Woodmen Road Interchange Complete

CDOT began reconstructing the I-25 Woodmen Road interchange in January 2001 as part of the I-25 Corridor Safety Improvements Project through the Pikes Peak Region. This safety improvement project was completed in July 2004 within budget.

Project Challenges:

Residential and commercial growth surrounding the interchange continues
to increase traffic volumes.
Access to and from Interstate 25 at the Woodmen Road interchange was
limited because of the inadequate lengths of on-ramps and turn lanes on
Woodmen Road.
Access to southbound I-25 from westbound Woodmen Road was limited
due to traffic volumes at peak travel times.
Woodmen Road's through lanes had reached maximum capacity at the
interchange resulting from increased traffic.

Project Goals:

The goals of the I-25 Woodmen Road safety improvement project were twofold:
1. To improve safety by replacing the outdated interchange
2. To accommodate potential capacity improvements

Project Solutions:

The following took place to improve safety:
Constructed acceleration/deceleration lanes to improve merging to and
from I-25
Added two longer dedicated left turn lanes from Woodmen Road to I-25
to ease congestion on Woodmen Road and improve access to I-25
Rebuilt Woodmen Road from Corporate Drive/Commerce Center Drive to
Campus/Vincent Drive to accommodate additional through and turn lanes
to ease congestion on Woodmen Road.
Lowered the elevation of Woodmen Road east of the interstate to improve
sight distance for motorists
Realigned Vincent Drive with Campus Drive eliminating an unnecessary
intersection on Woodmen Road and improving traffic flow
Added turning lanes at the Corporate Drive/Commerce Center intersection
and Campus Drive/Vincent Drive intersection to improve traffic flow on the
local street network in the area.

The following took place to accommodate potential capacity improvements:
Replaced the original ramp system with longer on-and off-ramps
Widened a total of six bridge structures over Pine Creek, Woodmen Road
and Cottonwood Creek to accommodate potential capacity improvements
Constructed wider shoulder widths to accommodate potential additional
lanes in the future

Funding:

The cost of this interchange safety improvement project was approximately $29 million
