Noise Barriers
Following federal and state guidelines, the COSMIX Project will be constructing permanent noise barriers to mitigate the impacts of traffic noise from I-25 and I-25 construction activities on neighboring residents. Residents will be subject to some noise when the sound barriers are constructed but every effort will be made to minimize the inconvenience associated with noise wall construction.

Essentially, noise walls will be constructed in six of the areas identified in the Environmental Assessment (EA) as needing noise mitigation. These noise walls are designed to be most effective for the first and second row of homes adjacent to the corridor and typically range in height from 8 to 20 feet.

Noise wall panels will be pre-cast concrete, which are textured and colored with concrete stain on both sides. The side of the noise wall facing I-25 will have a bold and simple design based on the mountain backdrop similar to existing noise walls in Colorado Springs along the interstate. Aesthetic treatments on the resident’s side will be more detailed based on designs picked during the EA’s public involvement process.

Noise Wall Locations Proposed

  • Holland Park noise barrier - summer 2005 through mid-November, 16 feet by 2,820 feet
  • Holiday Village noise barrier - date TBD , 8 feet by 860 feet
  • Pulpit Rock noise barrier - As early as mid-December 2005 through spring 2006, 15 feet 1,885 feet
  • Monument Valley Park duck ponds, residences - 2006 - 2007, 20 feet by 1,060 feet
  • Monument Valley Park Demonstration Garden - 2006 - 2007, 20 feet by 625 feet
  • Monument Valley Park baseball field and trail - 2006 - 2007, earthen berm, 890 feet

Holland Park Noise Wall Construction

Rockrimmon Constructors, the COSMIX Project contractor, began construction activities on the Holland Park noise wall in late July with the relocation of existing drainage and the placement of fill dirt along the slope of the alley paralleling I-25.

The Holland Park neighborhood noise wall is complete except staining and final grading of the slope and landscaping. The following is a brief Holland Park noise wall construction schedule.

Activity Timeframe Construction Staging Hours
Earthwork (grading, etc.) COMPLETE Alley Daytime (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
Delivery of fill dirt COMPLETE Alley Nighttime (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.)
Caisson drilling and column foundations COMPLETE Alley Daytime
Setting the wall panels and applying final finish (staining) PANELS COMPLETE. Staining will be complete by early November Highway/Alley Daytime
