the Gods.
June
2006
More warm temperatures in June allowed the COSMIX team to focus
on concrete and asphalt paving in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon and Fillmore
to Garden of the Gods segments. In addition, crews were able to begin
prep-work in the Bijou segment. The following work took place in June:
- Began

area for utilities relocation
-
Began proofrolling and trimming of the southbound Collector-Distributor
frontage road, the final stage before concrete paving.
April
2006
As the temperatures in April went up, so did the construction activities.
The work in April marked the start of what will be the busiest construction
season of project. This month, crews continued to focus their efforts
on the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment and returned to complete the Fillmore
to Garden of the Gods segment. April’s work in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon
segment included:
- Completed
utility work along westbound Rockrimmon Boulevard and moving traffic
back to its original configuration.
-
Constructing the northbound I-25 detour onto the new frontage road bridge
over Monument Creek.
-
Poured the floor and began the walls of the Corporate Drive Box Culvert
structure
-
Placed girders on the northbound frontage road bridge over Mark Dabling.
-
Poured VMS (electronic highway sign) caissons.
-
Began partial demolition of the northbound I-25 bridge over Monument
Creek.
On
the south end of the project, crews continued work on relocating the gas
line near the future Holiday Village noise wall.
March 2006
After a cold snap in February, March’s warm temperatures gave the
COSMIX team an opportunity to remain on schedule in the North Nevada /Rockrimmon
segment of the project. Typically, weather can severely impact schedule
this time of year. Construction in this segment continues to focus on
the northbound and southbound frontage roads and bridges over Monument
Creek, Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad. However,
work has now started with the foundations and piers for the I-25 mainline
bridges over Monument Creek as well.
During
March, work in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment included:
-
Pouring curb on the north and southbound frontage road bridges over
Monument Creek
-
Setting retaining walls on the north and southbound frontage road bridges
over Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR)
-
Drilled and poured caissons for the north and southbound I-25 bridge
over Monument Creek
-
Completed the scour wall for the Corporate Drive Box Culvert
-
Constructed abutments for the north and southbound frontage road bridges
over Mark Dabling Boulevard and the UPRR
-
Paved an off-ramp detour to southbound Nevada to accommodate work on
a box culvert
-
Placed girders for the southbound frontage road bridge over Mark Dabling
Boulevard
- Constructed
10 of the 12 caissons and columns for the northbound I-25 bridges over
Monument Creek.
-
Constructed 6 of the 12 caissons and columns for the southbound I-25
bridges over Monument Creek.
Further
south, the COSMIX team put the finishing touches on the Holland Park noise
barrier and started work on the Holiday Village noise barrier.
Work
in the Fillmore to Garden of the Gods segment included:
-
Seeding the slope against the Holland Park neighborhood noise wall
-
Began relocating a gas line near the future Holiday Village neighborhood
noise wall
February
2006
February was filled with work in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment
of the project, with major effort focused on the frontage road bridges
over Monument Creek, Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad.
The decks for north- and southbound bridges over Monument Creek were poured.
In addition, all of the piers for the north- and southbound frontage roads
over Mark Dabling and the Union Pacific Railroad were completed and the
girders are schedule for placement in March.
As
part of the work in the Rockrimmon area, the southbound on- and off-ramps
at Rockrimmon Boulevard were moved one-half mile south, connecting to
Tech Center Drive, to prepare for the construction of the southbound frontage
road. The northbound off-ramp to southbound Nevada Avenue was also closed
to begin excavation for a box culvert.
In
the Fillmore to Garden of the Gods segment, the design
of the Holiday Village noise wall was completed and work is scheduled
to start on the wall in March. Further north, detour paving was completed
to switch southbound I-25 traffic onto the new concrete pavement near
the Rockrimmon Boulevard exit. Detour paving was also completed to switch
southbound I-25 traffic toward the median from Cottonwood Creek to the
southbound Nevada Avenue off-ramp.
January 2006
The year 2006 started with a heavy construction schedule, which was only
a glimpse into what the next eleven months would be like for the busiest
year on the COSMIX project.
The North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment
would see the most construction with work on the frontage road bridges
over Monument Creek continuing with the completion of piers and the placement
of girders. Piers for the frontage road bridges over Mark Dabling Boulevard
and the Union Pacific Railroad were also completed and girders will be
placed in the coming months. Traffic on southbound I-25 was shifted to
the east from Cottonwood Creek to just north of the southbound Nevada
Avenue off-ramp.
In mid-January, the northbound I-25 ramp
to southbound Nevada Avenue was closed to begin work that eventually will
connect North Nevada Avenue to Corporate Drive.
Finally, in the Fillmore to Garden
of the Gods segment, southbound traffic was shifted to the inside
onto the new concrete pavement to allow the outside southbound lanes to
be paved.
