COSMIX Progress in 2006 from December back to January

December 2006
Snow, snow, and more snow summarize the conditions that COSMIX crews competed against to complete work during December. Despite the blizzards and cold temperatures, crews were able to complete a substantial amount of work:

  • Continued concrete staining on the north and southbound frontage road bridges over Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad.
  • Completed the placement of girders for the new north and southbound I-25 over Monument Creek, Rockrimmon Boulevard, Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad.
  • Continued construction of the I-25 bridges over Colorado Avenue.
  • Completed bridge decks for the new southbound I-25 over Nevada Avenue and the Midland Trail.
  • Completed caissons for Monument Valley Park noise walls.
  • Completed concrete and asphalt paving for northbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road and moved traffic to the west.
  • Completed guard rail and final alignment striping in the Woodmen to Academy segment.
  • Opened the third southbound lane between N. Academy Boulevard and Woodmen Road.
  • Began poured-in-place concrete barrier on the southbound Garden of the Gods off-ramp.

  • Constructed temporary southbound I-25 off-ramp to Pikes Peak Avenue for a detour route when the Bijou Street bridge and interchange closed January 3, 2007.

November 2006
November’s cold temperatures didn't’t slow down construction this month. With only a little over a year of construction left on the COSMIX project, Rockrimmon Constructors moved full speed ahead with their construction schedule. COSMIX accomplished the following during November:

  • Placed girders for the new I-25 bridges over the Midland Trail, Monument Creek in the Nevada / Rockrimmon area, and over the southbound off-ramp to Nevada Avenue.
  • Installed curb, gutter and sidewalk and paved the new Corporate Drive extension.
  • Finished removing portions of the Work Progress Administration (WPA) walls to allow for construction. These portions will be replaced, stone by stone, once the construction is complete.
  • Placed the abutment supports for the northbound I-25 bridge over Colorado Avenue.
  • Completed paving southbound I-25 between Nevada and Cottonwood Creek and shifted northbound traffic onto the new southbound lanes.
  • Completed erecting the retaining walls for the new Rockrimmon Boulevard extension
  • Demolished the Liquor Store on Colorado Avenue and two smaller buildings on Cucharras Street.
  • Drilled and poured caissons for the noise wall at Uintah.

October 2006
Despite the blizzard in October that impacted construction, crews were able to open the northbound third lane from Woodmen to Academy. Below are a few significant milestones that were reached on the COSMIX Project in October:

  • Northbound lanes of I-25 from Woodmen Road to N. Academy Avenue were placed in their final configuration and opened to the public
  • Completed the 10’ by 10’ box culverts at Popes Bluff, Rockrimmon South, Pulpit Rock and Corporate Drive
  • Completed piers for north and southbound I-25 over Monument Creek
  • Completed construction of the bridge abutments and retaining walls for north and southbound I-25 over Nevada Avenue
  • Completed both north and southbound I-25 bridge demolition over Mark Dabling and UPRR
  • Began bridge demolition and widening of northbound I-25 over Colorado Avenue

  • Placed concrete paving between Woodmen Road and Pine Creek
  • Completed pavement overlay in the Woodmen to North Academy segment
  • Numbered, removed, and stored 6,000 square feet (one percent) of the historic Works Progress Administration (WPA) wall along Monument Creek to accommodate bridge construction. A majority of the wall will be reset after construction is complete.

September 2006
Despite the incredibly wet summer, a tremendous amount of work was completed on the COSMIX Project. COSMIX crews have been working aggressively around the clock to complete even more construction before the snow begins to fly. Below is the work that was done in September:

  • Switched northbound traffic onto the new northbound frontage road between Garden of the Gods and North Nevada Avenue to allow for the reconstruction of I-25
  • Demolished the southbound I-25 bridge over Monument Creek
  • Began demolishing I-25 bridges over Mark Dabling Boulevard

  • Reopened the southbound off-ramp to Rockrimmon Boulevard, SB Exit 147, for the traveling public’s beneficial use
  • Began excavating a 65-foot deep hole for a drainage structure that eventually will be located under the Rockrimmon underpass at I-25.
  • Began paving third lane from Woodmen to Academy
  • Began staging operations for the I-25 bridges over Colorado Avenue
  • Began construction preparations for the Uintah sound walls
  • Closed southbound I-25 Bijou on-ramp to begin utility work and the construction of the temporary southbound off-ramp onto Pikes Peak Avenue.
  • Closed the north and southbound auxiliary lanes between Cimarron Street and Bijou Street to begin work on shoulders

August 2006
The month of August was busy with construction activity and progress. In addition to opening the southbound third lane between Garden of the Gods and Fillmore, COSMIX completed the following work:

  • Installed lighting on the new southbound frontage road in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment.
  • Switched southbound I-25 traffic onto the new southbound frontage road to allow crews to begin construction on the new I-25 mainline.
  • Constructed a temporary underpass for southbound off-ramp to N. Nevada Avenue.
  • Began installing pre-cast retaining wall panels for the I-25 bridges over the Nevada/Corporate Drive extension.
  • Started grading for northbound frontage road from Mark Dabling to Nevada
  • Seeded with natural grasses along southbound I-25 shoulder between Cottonwood and Monument Creeks.
  • Completed the demolition of the Western Gas Station and Budget Rent A Car on the west side of I-25 at Bijou Street. Removed the fuel tanks and completed environmental remediation of Western Gas property.

  • Installed curb and gutter at the new Rockrimmon interchange and Corporate Drive extension.
  • Installed southbound guardrail between Mark Dabling and Garden of the Gods.

July 2006
Heavy rains in July slowed down construction and caused concrete and asphalt paving operations to be delayed. Despite this bump in the road, Rockrimmon Constructors still completed the following work:

  • Asphalt paving of the southbound Garden of the Gods bridge deck.
  • Began installing lighting on the new southbound frontage road in the Nevada/ Rockrimmon area.
  • Continued concrete paving of the southbound frontage road between Cottonwood and Monument Creeks and between the temporary southbound Rockrimmon ramps at Rusina Road and Garden of the Gods Road
  • Began concrete paving of the southbound frontage road between Monument Creek and Mark Dabling Boulevard.
  • Backfilled the Corporate Drive box culvert to prepare for paving.
  • Set barrier along the southbound median at Pine Creek to prepare for interstate widening between Woodmen Road and North Academy Boulevard.
  • Completed the asphalt topcoat paving between Fillmore and Garden of the Gods.

June 2006
More warm temperatures in June allowed the COSMIX team to focus on concrete and asphalt paving in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon and Fillmore to Garden of the Gods segments. In addition, crews were able to begin prep-work in the Bijou segment. The following work took place in June:

  • Began demolition of the Western Convenience Gas Station on the west side of I-25 at Bijou to prepare for the reconstruction of the Bijou Interchange
  • Roto-milled and began asphalt paving on I-25 between Fillmore Street and Garden of the Gods Road
  • Began paving the southbound frontage road in concrete between Cottonwood and Monument Creeks and between the temporary southbound Rockrimmon ramps at Rusina and Garden of the Gods Road
  • Set pre-cast concrete wall panels for the Holiday Village noise barrier
  • Poured concrete approach slabs and bridge railing on the northbound frontage road bridges over Mark Dabling and the UPPR
  • Began utilities relocation in preparation to construct the Pulpit Rock neighborhood noise wall
  • Began moving dirt from the northbound east shoulder between Woodmen Road and North Academy Boulevard in preparation for widening

May 2006
Early May’s construction activities focused on the new North Nevada/Rockrimmon interchange, the Holiday Village and Pulpit Rock neighborhood noise wall, and preparing for work in the Woodmen to Academy segment. During May, the following work took place:

  • The concrete deck and the approach slabs for the northbound frontage road bridge over Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific railroad was poured.
  • Partial demolition of the I-25 bridge over Monument Creek.
  • Poured VMS (electronic highway signs) caissons in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon and Woodmen to Academy segments, as well as the concrete caissons for the Holiday Village noise wall.
  • Began prepping the Pulpit Rock neighborhood noise wall construction area for utilities relocation
  • Began proofrolling and trimming of the southbound Collector-Distributor frontage road, the final stage before concrete paving.

April 2006
As the temperatures in April went up, so did the construction activities. The work in April marked the start of what will be the busiest construction season of project. This month, crews continued to focus their efforts on the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment and returned to complete the Fillmore to Garden of the Gods segment. April’s work in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment included:

  • Completed utility work along westbound Rockrimmon Boulevard and moving traffic back to its original configuration.
  • Constructing the northbound I-25 detour onto the new frontage road bridge over Monument Creek.
  • Poured the floor and began the walls of the Corporate Drive Box Culvert structure
  • Placed girders on the northbound frontage road bridge over Mark Dabling.
  • Poured VMS (electronic highway sign) caissons.
  • Began partial demolition of the northbound I-25 bridge over Monument Creek.

On the south end of the project, crews continued work on relocating the gas line near the future Holiday Village noise wall.

March 2006
After a cold snap in February, March’s warm temperatures gave the COSMIX team an opportunity to remain on schedule in the North Nevada /Rockrimmon segment of the project. Typically, weather can severely impact schedule this time of year. Construction in this segment continues to focus on the northbound and southbound frontage roads and bridges over Monument Creek, Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad. However, work has now started with the foundations and piers for the I-25 mainline bridges over Monument Creek as well.

During March, work in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment included:

  • Pouring curb on the north and southbound frontage road bridges over Monument Creek
  • Setting retaining walls on the north and southbound frontage road bridges over Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR)
  • Drilled and poured caissons for the north and southbound I-25 bridge over Monument Creek
  • Completed the scour wall for the Corporate Drive Box Culvert
  • Constructed abutments for the north and southbound frontage road bridges over Mark Dabling Boulevard and the UPRR
  • Paved an off-ramp detour to southbound Nevada to accommodate work on a box culvert
  • Placed girders for the southbound frontage road bridge over Mark Dabling Boulevard
  • Constructed 10 of the 12 caissons and columns for the northbound I-25 bridges over Monument Creek.
  • Constructed 6 of the 12 caissons and columns for the southbound I-25 bridges over Monument Creek.

Further south, the COSMIX team put the finishing touches on the Holland Park noise barrier and started work on the Holiday Village noise barrier.

Work in the Fillmore to Garden of the Gods segment included:

  • Seeding the slope against the Holland Park neighborhood noise wall
  • Began relocating a gas line near the future Holiday Village neighborhood noise wall

February 2006
February was filled with work in the North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment of the project, with major effort focused on the frontage road bridges over Monument Creek, Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad. The decks for north- and southbound bridges over Monument Creek were poured. In addition, all of the piers for the north- and southbound frontage roads over Mark Dabling and the Union Pacific Railroad were completed and the girders are schedule for placement in March.

As part of the work in the Rockrimmon area, the southbound on- and off-ramps at Rockrimmon Boulevard were moved one-half mile south, connecting to Tech Center Drive, to prepare for the construction of the southbound frontage road. The northbound off-ramp to southbound Nevada Avenue was also closed to begin excavation for a box culvert.

In the Fillmore to Garden of the Gods segment, the design of the Holiday Village noise wall was completed and work is scheduled to start on the wall in March. Further north, detour paving was completed to switch southbound I-25 traffic onto the new concrete pavement near the Rockrimmon Boulevard exit. Detour paving was also completed to switch southbound I-25 traffic toward the median from Cottonwood Creek to the southbound Nevada Avenue off-ramp.

January 2006
The year 2006 started with a heavy construction schedule, which was only a glimpse into what the next eleven months would be like for the busiest year on the COSMIX project.

The North Nevada/Rockrimmon segment would see the most construction with work on the frontage road bridges over Monument Creek continuing with the completion of piers and the placement of girders. Piers for the frontage road bridges over Mark Dabling Boulevard and the Union Pacific Railroad were also completed and girders will be placed in the coming months. Traffic on southbound I-25 was shifted to the east from Cottonwood Creek to just north of the southbound Nevada Avenue off-ramp.

In mid-January, the northbound I-25 ramp to southbound Nevada Avenue was closed to begin work that eventually will connect North Nevada Avenue to Corporate Drive.

Finally, in the Fillmore to Garden of the Gods segment, southbound traffic was shifted to the inside onto the new concrete pavement to allow the outside southbound lanes to be paved.
