  • COSMIX, short for the Colorado Springs Metro Interstate Expansion will widen I-25 to three lanes in each direction along 12-plus miles from south of the Bijou interchange to just south of North Academy Boulevard.
  • It will also improve the configuration of several key interchanges and bridges along the corridor.
  • Work started in summer 2005 and will be completed by winter of 2007.
  • All work throughout the corridor will be designed and constructed in such a way so as not to preclude eight through-lane interstate (four lanes in each direction), to be completed at some undetermined time in the future when funds are available.

CDOT has established the following goals to guide the project team and the contractor throughout construction:

  • Maximize capacity and mobility improvements in the corridor within the program budget of approximately $150 million
  • Minimize inconvenience to the public during construction
  • Provide a quality project
  • Complete by the end of calendar year 2008
  • Provide a visually pleasing final product

Funding:

  • The majority of funding is from TRANs bonds (Transportation Revenue Anticipation Notes, TRANs bonds were approved by voters to speed up critical transportation projects in Colorado).
  • The City of Colorado Springs has committed $10 million to help reconstruct the Bijou Bridge and build the connection from North Nevada Avenue to Corporate Drive at the North Nevada Avenue/Rockrimmon Boulevard interchange.
  • COSMIX is the next step in the Colorado Department of Transportation's long-term plans for I-25 through the Pikes Peak region.
  • It is a deliberate strategy that unifies several safety improvements completed over the past several years, including the North Academy, Woodmen and Nevada/Tejon interchanges.
  • After this project is complete, another $400 million of capacity improvements will be needed along the corridor, with the long-term goal of widening I-25 to eight lanes - four in each direction from South Academy Boulevard to North Academy Boulevard, and to six lanes from North Academy Boulevard to State Highway 105 in Monument.
  • The priority and phasing for these future improvements will be determined based on available funding.
